You may be playing in a band, a small group or be a solo artist, it is not easy to play the guitar and sing at the same time. In many cases, either you become good at the guitar and suck on vocals.
If you find yourself in this situation where you can not play the guitar and sing at the same time, know you are not alone. Many guitar players do not use their full potential as artists.
One of the reasons why it is difficult to play the guitar and sing at the same time is that we humans have a coordination problem. We can not easily do two things at the same time without losing focus.
Playing the guitar and sing at the same time can be considered as multitasking. Many people do not like to multitask because it can be very distracting. The best way to solve this problem is to train our brains to play and sing at the same time. This requires training and a lot of practice.
One thing to point out is that the voice we sing comes from the vocal cords. The vocal cords are considered as a human musical instrument. The voice can go up or down or do vibrato of which the vocal muscles help produce the voice.
The vocal cords have to be taken care to avoid being damaged.
Vocal cords can get damaged by singing very high range above the level the muscles can go. If you hear that your voice has a hoarseness sound for more than a week or two, you will need to see a doctor for a checkup. This will avoid permanent damage to your vocal cords.
There are various methods out there how you can learn how to play the guitar. You can get an instructor who will guide you step by step or the other method of learning online.
While having an instructor is still recommended, it has become more difficult to have an instructor teach at home how to play the guitar and vocals. Normally, you would need two instructors. If by chance you find one, it would still be a little more expensive.
The other main hindrance to have the instructor come home to give lessons, is time. It’s difficult to schedule time due to work situation or other appointments that may come up.
Online lessons on how to sing are becoming more popular now due to time convenience. You can do the lesson at your own pace. All you need is to follow the instructor’s lessons in the videos. You can concentrate on the vocal lessons and later practice with the guitar the songs you have learned.
So, if you want to learn how to play the guitar and sing at the same time, consider taking vocal lessons then later practice with the guitar. This is the easiest way how to the play the guitar and sing at the same time.

I have always been amazed by how some people can play an instrument and sing at the same time. Especially when it comes to guitar. I wouldn’t even want to go down that road and learning how to sing and play guitar at the same time. Those that can do both do it pretty well. Thanks for the insightful article.
Hi! this is a very good topic! I’m a musician too and I do play & sing! I Agree that singing and playing the guitar must have regarded in some ways as something different from the sum of two things… it’s a new thing! It require new training, new coordination and new self consciousness. There are a lot of methods for guitarists and a lot for singers but not so much for sing&play;. It should be a good subject to dig in!
Interesting article. I really like playing the guitar, even if I’m not an experienced player and never have had issues with singing at the same time. As you mentioned, not all of us have coordination and able of multitasking.Do you think that taking online guitar lessons are a good solution compared with a face to face instructor? Taking online lessons is OK, but if I do s mistake, how I would know?
Hello there! I have always wondered how people do this and make it seem effortless as well. I play the guitar and sometimes find that difficult enough but to add singing to that?
I think you are right that it will take practice to train yourself to sing an play guitar as well. It is definitely a matter of good timing and patience.
